2011 is our 20th Anniversary

CSR is intrinsically linked to individual, social and corporate wellbeing. There are also important links to the Health & Safety  (H & S) policies of businesses and organisations and their responsibilities to their employees. Together these approaches cover a moral and ethical approach that includes wellbeing with the statutory requirements for mental health and wellbeing through H & S legislation.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) defines stress as ‘the adverse reaction people have to excessive pressure or other types of demand placed upon them’. Excessive and long term stress can lead to more severe mental and physical problems.

HUBB can offer a number of ideas and solutions that can encompass both your CSR and your H & S policies. Training ‘Mental Health First Aiders’, for example, looking after your employees and helping them look after themselves helps develop motivation and engagement in your business. This transfers to their family and social life. It also looks at the prevention of mental health issues rather than dealing with situations once they have reached crisis point, which are often recognised through sick leave or disciplinary issues or, more arguably even more detrimentally, through ‘presenteeism’! Positive interventions to prevent damaging stress levels could provide a major social return on investment (SROI) as well as a business return on Investment (ROI).

Ask the following questions of yourself and your organisation :

Look at your answers. What is the cost to your organisation in not doing something differently? What could be saved by promoting positive mental health awareness? The moral, ethical, social and financial benefits to your organisation will be invaluable. Ignoring the mental health of your workforce will not only affect them as individuals, but will have a domino affect on those around them - inside and outside work.

Real and Effective Corporate Social Responsibility!

Corporate Social Responsibility

What is Corporate Social Responsibility?

Put simply Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is effectively connecting the corporate business world with general society. Business needs society in order to function effectively and society requires business interests to invest in its wellbeing and development. One cannot function effectively without the other.

Perception of CSR is that businesses engage in projects that perform some social function . For example it could be providing funds and manpower to refurbish a local community centre, or give employees time off to engage in local community projects. Rightly or wrongly this can sometimes be misinterpreted as a public relations exercise in order to paint the business in a positive light.
